Experiment 1 Aim : To determine the effect of temperature on the rate of reaction Apparatus : 250 ml beaker , thermometer , Bunsen burner , tripod stand , boiling tubes measuring cylinder , ruler , magnesium ribbon , sulphuric acid stopwatch Method : Measure 20ml of the acid in 5 boiling tubes . Cut a piece of Magnesium ribbon into strips of 2 cm . Place a beaker of water to boil ( this is a water bath ) . When the water boils turn off the flame and place one of the tubes in the bath . Record the maintained temperature of the acid . Add a strip of magnesium and record the time taken for the magnesium to disappear . Allow the water bath to drop 15 to 20 degrees and repeat . Continue to room temperature . Discussion : What are the manipulated and controlled variables ? How does the rate vary with temperature ? Why ? Was this method appropriate ? Any errors ? Any ways of improvement ? From the graph can you determine the rate constant ? Criteria : ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION Analysis and Interpretation Explanations - 7 mks Conclusion - 2 mks Graph - 3 mks
