Title : SEPARATING MIXTURES Aim : To separate a mixture of sand and salt . Directions : Place two spatula measures of the sand-salt mixture in a beaker and add 50 ml of water . Stir thoroughly . Fold the filter paper into a cone and place inside the funnel . Moisten the paper so that it sticks to the side of the funnel . Carefully add the suspension and allow all the liquid to pass through . Rinse the residue with some more water . Remove the paper , unfold and spread out to allow the residue to join . Place the filtrate over a flame and heat until a small volume of filtrate is left . Place this in the evaporating dish and heat over a water bath until only salt crystals are left . Discussion : What are the processes involved in the separation ? Why is the salt crystallized using a water bath ? Why was the residue washed before removing ? Are there any other method(s) that could be used to separate the sand and salt ? Criteria : MANIPULATION a) filtering folding the paper correctly not over pouring during the process appearance of filtrate b) using the measuring cylinder keeping the cylinder on a flat surface reading at eye level reading the bottom of the meniscus c) using the Bunsen closing the air hole during lighting lighting the match before turning on the gas adjustment of flame during use d) evaporating control of the process , not allowing total dryness
